Scott Holcomb, a pitcher who helped the El Dorado High School baseball team to a 22-7 record and the semifinals of the Southern Section 4-A playoffs, has signed a free-agent contract with the Oakland A’s.
A left-hander who was 12-1 with a 1.27 earned-run average this season, Holcomb reported to Medford, Ore., Wednesday to play with Oakland’s Class A affiliate in the Northwest League.
Holcomb was not drafted in June and had signed a letter of intent to attend Oral Roberts University. He decided to turn professional after receiving offers from the A’s, Chicago White Sox, Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies.
