Labat, Fiedler May Transfer to UCI

Former Ocean View High School basketball player Mike Labat and Mater Dei product Mike Fielder have expressed interest in transferring to UC Irvine, UCI Coach Bill Mulligan confirmed Thursday.
Labat, a 6-6 swing man who worked his way into the starting lineup last season at the University of Idaho, has been released from his scholarship there because of his desire to switch schools and has contacted Mulligan about transferring to Irvine.
Fielder, a 6-4 guard who redshirted as a sophomore at Marist College last season, has told Mulligan that he is interested in joining former Mater Dei teammate Tom Lewis at UCI. Lewis announced in May that he was transferring from USC to Irvine.
The status of Labat and Fielder is still uncertain, pending evaluation of their transcripts. Neither has been offered a scholarship, Mulligan said.
Should they be admitted, Labat and Fielder would join Lewis and Creighton transfer Ed Johansen in sitting out the 1986-87 season and would be eligible to play in 1987-88.
