SEOUL, South Korea — U.S. Ambassador Richard L. Walker met dissident leader Kim Dae Jung on Friday for the first time since President Chun Doo Hwan came to power in 1980. Aides to Walker said Kim attended an Independence Day reception at Walker’s residence--the first time he has been invited to a U.S. Embassy function in six years.
The government has lodged a protest with the U.S. Embassy over Kim’s invitation, government sources said.
