Roo Art raced to a wire-to-wire victory in the $284,500 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.
Reversing his horse’s usual off-the-pace tendency, jockey Pat Day broke Roo Art on top in the 1-mile race and led virtually every step of the way, coasting home by two lengths over Proud Truth, ridden by Jorge Valasquez.
The Woody Stephens-trained entry of Creme Fraiche and Danzig Connection, the last two Belmont Stakes winners and 7-5 betting favorites, finished third and fourth, respectively, after being restrained off a slow early pace.
Roo Art ran the race in a moderate 2:01 1/5 and paid $10.80, $5.20 and $2.80 as the fourth choice of the crowd of 20,210.
