A 5-year-old Sun Valley girl died Saturday when she jumped out of a slowly moving car and was crushed under a rear wheel, Los Angeles police reported.
The girl, Nicole Foster, and another 5-year-old girl were playing in a station wagon about 12:45 p.m. near the intersection of Via Salerno and Cabrini drives, private streets in a condominium complex south of Villa Cabrini Park, Sgt. Ron Barnes said.
The other girl, whose mother owns the car, got out of the station wagon, leaving Nicole inside. The car began moving, apparently because the parking brake had accidentally been released, Barnes said.
Nicole tried to get out of the car through the driver’s door, Barnes said. She opened the door but slipped, and the door knocked her to the pavement. The car then turned slightly to the left and ran over her, Barnes said.
The other girl, who was not identified, tried to stop the car. Her mother saw the incident from across the street but could not reach the car in time, Barnes said.
Nicole was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, where she was pronounced dead.
