Pat Bradley, rookie Deb Richard, Cindy Hill and Val Skinner moved into a tie for the lead at 211 Saturday as scores soared in the third round of the $275,000 Boston Five golf tournament at Danvers, Mass.
Bradley, the LPGA money leader with $314,497 this year, struggled to a two-over-par 74 in windy, overcast weather on the 6,008-yard Tara Ferncroft course.
Richard, runner-up for the NCAA championship while at the University of Florida, fired a 73. Hill had the best score of the day among the leaders--a 71 that included birdies on the 16th and 17th holes. Skinner shot a 72.
Ok-Hee Ku, a rookie from South Korea, slumped to a 76 after a pair of 68s had enabled her to lead a U.S. tournament for the first time.
Ku, playing with Bradley and Richard, lost sole possession of the lead when she hit into the water and took a double-bogey 6 on the first hole. She battled gamely and managed to hold a share of the lead until a bogey on the 16th hole dropped her one shot behind at 212.
Curt Byrum, hoping to regain his PGA Tour status, shot a six-under-par 64 for a two-stroke lead after three rounds of the $400,000 Hardee’s tournament at Coal Valley, Ill.
Byrum, 27, making his first tour appearance since losing his qualifying card last year, has a 54-hole total of 198. Mark Wiebe, who shot a third-round 68, was at 200.
Mike Smith, who opened with a 73 and followed with a 63, was third at 202 after a 66.
Jim Ferree, using a unique 48-inch putter designed by first-round leader Charles Owens, shot a five-under-par 66 to take a one-stroke lead in the $251,000 Senior PGA tournament at Grand Rapids, Mich.
Ferree has a 36-hole total of 134 on the 6,453-yard Elks Country Club course.
Owens, who shot a 68, was tied at 135 with Bruce Crampton and Gene Littler, who each had a 67. Gardner Dickinson, Gay Brewer and Chi Chi Rodriguez were at 136.
