Sheik Mohammed Maktoum of Dubai, apparently in partnership with Britain’s Robert Sangster, paid $3.6 million for a Northern Dancer colt for the top price during the first day of the 44th annual Keeneland selected yearling sale.
The overall bidding on 154 yearlings indicated that buyers were not going to pay record sums for untested horses. Only six yearlings brought more than $1 million in bidding. Most of the yearlings fell into the $350,000-$750,000 range. Last year, 25 yearlings brought in excess of $1 million each at the breeding industry’s most prestigious sale.
