MOVIES OF THE ‘80s : CRIME PAYS IN HOLLYWOOD
- Share via
Very surprisingly, in defiance of what almost everybody believes is a creative slump, the Hollywood crime movie--or the movie with a backdrop of modern corruption--has made a tremendous resurgence recently. Some of the best examples of the whole genre have come in the past several years: stylish, rich, deep, and excitingly made.
Is this one of the few remaining areas today where serious film artists can find a way to express themselves? Has modern-day Hollywood discovered some profound understanding of the underworld? It’s probably unwise to dwell too long on that. . . .
Among the Best: Once Upon a Time in America (Sergio Leone), Rumble Fish (Francis Coppola), The Cotton Club (Francis Coppola), Prizzi’s Honor (John Huston), Atlantic City (Louis Malle), Gloria (John Cassavetes), Cutter’s Way (Ivan Passer), To Live and Die in L.A. (William Friedkin), Trouble in Mind (Alan Rudolph), Body Heat (Lawrence Kasdan), Year of the Dragon (Michael Cimino), Hammett (Wim Wenders).
