2 Held in Robberies, Thefts, Shooting

Two men were arrested Friday night after allegedly robbing a man at the Del Mar Amtrak station and shooting the victim as he pursued them in his car, the Sheriff’s Department reported.

The two also are suspected of robbing a person in Hillcrest earlier in the evening and driving stolen vehicles.

Jose Esquivel, 18, and Alejandro Celaya-Martinez, 21, both transients, are being held at Vista Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and robbery, Sgt. R.W. Curry said.

About 7:40 p.m., two men robbed a victim on the street in the 4200 block of Maryland Avenue in Hillcrest. The suspects left the scene in two pick-up trucks, both of which had been reported stolen, said Gary Learn, a San Diego Police Department spokesman.

The two trucks were found near Polk Avenue and Louisiana Street, where the driver of the truck had apparently hit several parked cars on Louisiana. The man then stole a sports car at gunpoint from a woman in that area, Learn said.

About one hour later, two men took $10 from the victim at the Amtrak station, Curry said.

At 9:15 p.m., deputies at the Encinitas substation responded to a call that two men were firing shots into a crowd of people at the beach in Del Mar and arrested Esquivel and Celaya-Martinez.
