YONKERS, N.Y. — Barberry Spur equaled the Cane Pace final record of 1:55 1/5 Sunday night, scoring a 4-length victory over H H Shadow in the first leg of pacing’s Triple Crown.
For trainer Dick Stillings and owner Roy Davis, the victory represented a sweep of both Yonkers Triple Crown events for 3-year-olds. They also sent Gunslinger Spur to victory in the Yonkers Trot on June 21.
Barberry Spur was driven by Bill O’Donnell.
H H Shadow, trying to become just the second filly to win the Cane in 32 runnings, finished three lengths ahead of Amity Chef.
The victory earned $108,552 for owner Davis, and added to the $54,276.40 earned by winning the first elimination heat, made it a $162,828.40 pay day.
Barberry Spur returned $4.20, $3 and $2.60. H H Shadow paid $4.80 and $3, and Amity Chef $2.60.
Barberry Spur is scheduled to race next in the Adios Pace, Aug. 9, at the Meadows in Washington, Pa.
