Neighbors said that Jake, a 45-pound pit bullterrier, had never tried to bite anyone before.
Yet for reasons no one could explain, Jake launched a vicious attack on an 18-month-old boy who was playing in Jake’s backyard in Westminster. The damage was extreme.
Pit bulls, bred for fighting, can exert up to 2,000 pounds per square inch of pressure with their jaws. By comparison, a Doberman pinscher can exert about 700 pounds of pressure.
Before the boy’s mother, Christina Brown, could fend off the dog, it had dragged the boy 20 feet and had ripped away large portions of the boy’s face and neck.
Claremont Brown was placed under intensive care at Childrens Hospital of Orange County, where he steadily improved from his initially critical condition. His mother was treated for dog bites on her arms and was released.
Jake was placed in quarantine at the county animal shelter and later killed for tests to determine whether he was rabid. County officials said tentatively that there appeared to be no sign of the disease.
