Stray Missile Lands in Alabama

MONROEVILLE, Ala. — An unarmed cruise missile fired from a U.S. Navy battleship in the Gulf of Mexico during a weekend test exercise malfunctioned and fell into a swamp in southern Alabama, authorities said today.
“There was no damage to the missile, no damage to property and no personal injury,” a spokesman for the Joint Cruise Missile Project in Washington said. The 18-foot-long missile landed in a sparsely settled area Saturday, startling several residents.
