USTA Boys’ 12 Tennis Tournament : Top Seeds Eliminated in Quarterfinals

SAN DIEGO — It was a bad day for the top seeds Friday in the quarterfinals of the USTA Boys’ 12 Tennis Tournament at Morley Field. Both the top-seeded singles player and doubles team were upset.
No. 1-seed Vincent Spadea of Boca Raton, Fla., was eliminated by seventh-seeded Chris Devore of Decatur, Ill., 6-1, 7-5. Devore will meet fourth-seeded Jeff Salzenstein of Englewood, Colo., in a semifinal match today at 10:30 a.m. Salzenstein defeated No. 5-seed Jeffrey Giraldo of Grosse Pointe, Mich., 7-5, 0-6, 6-1.
Today’s other semifinal match, at noon, will feature second-seeded Brian Dunn of Brandon, Fla., against sixth-seeded Eddie Schwartz of Riverwoods, Ill. Dunn and Schwartz defeated unseeded players in Friday’s quarterfinals. Dunn beat Krunch Kloberdanz of Oklahoma City, 6-0, 6-2, and Schwartz defeated Court Gettel of Tucson, 7-5, 6-0.
In doubles, the top-seeded team of Brian Dabsha of Pitusville, Fla., and Damon Henkel of Satellite Beach, Fla., was ousted by sixth-seeded Dunn and Gettel, 6-1, 7-5. Dunn and Gettel will meet the third-seeded team of Salzenstein and Giraldo in a semifinal match today at 3 p.m. Salzenstein and Giraldo beat Paul Galichia of Wichita, Kan., and Ross Lowell of Los Angeles, 6-2, 6-2.
The other semifinal doubles match, also at 3, will pit the fourth-seeded team of Wayne Boich of Florida and Spadea against second-seeded Joseph Carneley of Destin, Fla., and Jon Goldfarb of Tamarac, Fla.
