The Region : Clerics Urge Boost in Aid to Homeless

Religious leaders serving on the county Commission of Conscience appealed to Los Angeles County supervisors to increase the money for food and housing allotted to the county’s estimated 30,000 homeless street people. In a report to the supervisors, the commission of two-dozen clerics called the $228 a month currently paid to the poor in general relief or county welfare “abysmally low” and suggested it be raised “to a level which will sustain a decent way of life.” It also called for an end to the practice of taking the poor off general relief for 60 days if they make mistakes in paper work or fail to show up for job training or job interviews.
