A 24-year-old man visiting from England fell to his death as he was taking pictures at La Jolla Cove on Friday morning, Deputy Coroner Jack Larkie said.
Andrew John Gillespie, of Swindon Wiltshire, England, was found floating in the ocean near the 500 block of Coast Boulevard in La Jolla by lifeguards. He was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:43 p.m.
Gillespie’s friend told Larkie that they had been walking along the cliffs taking pictures, and when he turned around to ask Gillespie something he had disappeared. Gillespie had been staying at a youth hostel in Point Loma, his friend told Larkin.
Larkin said an autopsy will be conducted.
