Syria is planning to increase its arms purchases from the Soviet Union over the next year by allocating more than 55% of total government expenditure to defense, Jane’s Defense Weekly reported. The authoritative British magazine said that arms spending in the coming year will be $3.6 billion, an increase of 5% over last year. It said that purchases of sophisticated Soviet equipment like the MIG-29 Fulcrum and SS-21 missiles will account for over half of the expenditures.
