Chief Buthelezi

Amid all the mass media hysteria about South Africa, it is indeed refreshing to read Michael Parks’ sane, in-depth article on the front page of The Times (Aug. 11).
We congratulate The Times and Parks for providing us with a truly informative look at Zulu Chief Buthelezi and what he is trying to do--bring reasonable and long-term solutions to some very difficult problems.
We don’t hear enough about this most important and powerful black leader--most of the focus seems to be on Bishop Desmond (“Tell the West to go to hell”) Tutu.
Thus, we are encouraged by your appraisal of Buthelezi and the possibility of “the normalization of South Africa as a modern, Western-style industrial democracy,” as he phrases it.
