‘Big Spender’
Ronald Reagan, his Administration, and the Republican Party have capitalized on their successful establishment of the mythology about the Democrats as the “big spenders.” It is high irony that President Reagan assumes the mantle of the “big spender” when it suits his political purpose.
He boasted (Times, Aug. 13) that his Administration spent $26 billion in this year alone on farm support programs, more than the $20 billion spent by the Jimmy Carter Administration during its four years in office.
Brownie points for Ronald Reagan, the big spender--and it doesn’t even come under the heading of national defense.
