A Pomona man was arrested on suspicion of having fired the shot that fatally wounded off-duty Corona police officer Patricia Dwyer last Friday. Harold Harvey Hawks, 26, was arrested at his home and held on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Police said Officer Dwyer’s husband, Mike Dwyer, had become involved in an altercation with Hawks, who subsequently followed them onto the Riverside Freeway, pulled alongside the Dwyers’ van, and fired a single shot that struck Patricia Dwyer in the head. She was pronounced dead at Corona Community Hospital. A passenger in the Dwyers’s van, Wendy Varga, 21, of Rancho Cucamonga, was in stable condition at the same hospital with a throat wound police said was apparently caused by the same slug.
