USC Loses Guerrero for Season to Knee Injury

Offensive tackle John Guerrero of USC, who tore ligaments in his left knee during practice Thursday, will undergo surgery today and apparently will miss the season. Guerrero, 6-4 and 300 pounds, was expected to be a starter in the Trojans’ offensive line.

It is the second time in less than a year that Guerrero has torn his left knee ligaments. After redshirting in 1984, he played briefly last season, then was injured in USC’s fourth game and had arthroscopic surgery. Guerrero returned to play in the Aloha Bowl.

Either John Page, a 6-5, 275-pound junior, or Chuck Kunsaitis, a 6-6, 250-pound redshirt freshman, will replace Guerrero in USC’s season-opening game against Illinois Sept. 13 at the Coliseum.
