Senate Panel Votes Almost No Funds for New Public Housing

WASHINGTON — A Senate panel approved a $53-billion appropriations bill Thursday to operate the Housing and Urban Development Department and 17 other agencies that includes virtually no money for new public housing.
The bill, approved on a voice vote by the Senate Appropriations HUD and independent agencies subcommittee, contains $7.5 billion for federally assisted housing, down from the $9.5 billion budgeted for the current fiscal year.
The only construction money for new public housing is earmarked for 2,000 units on Indian reservations. Other housing funds would be spent on rent subsidies, maintenance of existing public housing units and completion of ongoing construction projects.
