La Verne : Delay on Water-Rate Hike

The La Verne City Council is still undecided about a proposed $20 bimonthly increase in water rates for homeowners that would help finance the city’s share of the construction of a water treatment plant, Public Works Director Brian Bowcock said.
City Engineer Kenneth Mullen earlier had proposed charging $15 to those with 3/4-inch meters and $25 for 1-inch meters, the two sizes currently used in city residences.
Bowcock said the council will decide at its Oct. 6 meeting whether to base the additional charge on the size of water meters. At present, bimonthly water rates start at $11.45 for 3/4-inch meters, and the city is considering a $20 across-the-board charge for meters of up to 1 inch.
“We’re looking at historical data on the larger users,” Bowcock said of the city’s commercial and industrial sectors. “They have larger meters and as the consumption goes up, so do the rates.”
La Verne will have to pay $950,000 a year for its share of construction costs on the Miramar water treatment plant in Claremont, which also will serve the Southern California Water Co. and the Three Valleys Municipal Water District.
