Green Is the Color When La Mirada incorporated, its founders took a hard look at other cities and spotted a flaw: There was too much concrete and asphalt. La Mirada’s creators were determined not to make the same mistake. So plants, trees and shrubs were ordered by the truckloads to accomplish the greening of La Mirada. Having a green thumb was almost a prerequisite for working in the bloomming bedroom community. Street medians were landscaped. New parks were mandated and sprinkler heads arrived by the hundreds. The approach has sprouted dividends. Today, the city’s nine parks and athletic complexes, including 107-acre La Mirada Regional Park, have colored the cityscape green, and the city has won high praise for its look. It costs nearly $500,000 a year to maintain the parks and medians. But amid an urban environment often paved over for development, La Mirada officials say it is well worth the expense.
