The Region : Woman Killed in Newport

Newport Beach police were investigating the fatal shooting of a woman aboard a boat tied up near the mouth of Upper Newport Bay, officers said. The shooting occurred about 7:15 p.m., according to the Newport Beach watch commander’s office, but details were unavailable. A forensic specialist with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department was requested by Newport Beach police about 9:15 p.m., said Lt. Larry Richey. “They requested one of our criminalists, and that’s all I know,” he said. Police said that, pending completion of their investigation, which continued into the night, it wasn’t known if the shooting was accidental. The victim’s identity was not immediately determined, police said.
