Golf Roundup : Japan Beats U.S. in Dunhill Cup

The United States, the tournament favorite, stumbled out of the $1-million Dunhill Cup team golf competition Saturday, losing, 2-1, in the semifinals to a jubilant Japanese team at St. Andrew’s, Scotland.
In today’s final, Japan will play defending champion Australia, which beat Scotland by the same score. The winning team will collect $300,000.
Mark O’Meara posted the only American victory, 70-77 over Jet Osaki.
Ray Floyd, the U.S. Open champion and captain of the American team, lost by seven strokes to Tommy Nakajima, who shot a 69.
Lanny Wadkins lost to Joe Osaki, who made the turn in five-under-par 31 en route to a five-shot victory with a 69.
Arnold Palmer shot a 67 to keep the lead after two rounds in a $165,000 Senior tournament at Cape Elizabeth, Me. Palmer has a total of 132 for a two-stroke lead over Billy Casper.
At Abilene, Tex., Mark Calcavecchia held a five-stroke lead over Tom Byrum going into today’s final round of the $400,000 Southwest tournament. Calcavecchia shot a 66 and has a total of 204.
