Former Tampa Mayor Bob Martinez, a one-time Democrat, appeared well on his way to winning the Republican nomination for governor of Florida in a runoff election against former Rep. Lou Frey. For the Democrats, Atty. Gen. Jim Smith took an early lead over former state Rep. Steve Pajcic. The candidates were fighting for a chance to succeed Gov. Bob Graham, a two-term Democrat who is challenging Republican incumbent Sen. Paula Hawkins.
