UA publicists described “Daylights” as “your basic Bond movie.”
But we were still curious about 007’s latest--so, we resorted to some Bondian tactics: We snuck a look at the script (by Richard Maibaum and Michael G. Wilson).
It is your basic James Bond movie:
There’s (as ever) a truly fantastic stunt sequence (but, gee, we can’t give it away). There are voluptuous women. One is tabbed a “Gorgeous curvaceous beauty in revealing see-through net bathing suit.” Another is described as having a “majestic bosom” with “monumental cleavage.”
In particular, a lovely but lethal Czech cellist catches James’ eye. Moneypenny chides James for not telling her that he’s a music lover: “Anytime you like, drop by and we’ll listen to my Barry Manilow collection.”
Bond also has close encounters with an arms dealer, an Afghani freedom fighter and a KGB defector. There a hectic chase through an Afghani marketplace in which a bad Russian tumbles into a vat of red dye. Observes James, “Better red than dead.”
And there’s your basic Bond ending--in which the girl tumbles into his arms and (sigh). . . oh, James!
