FAA’s Jurisdiction

Lillian Seymour’s letter on the crowded skies of Orange County (Oct. 5) alleges that military operations are not subject to Federal Aviation Administration control. She also believes that Orange County will somehow be a safer place if just the military helicopters at Los Alamitos are removed.
Seymour is seriously misinformed about the FAA’s jurisdiction over military operations. All aircraft, including the military, are subject to FAA regulations. The helicopters that fly from Los Alamitos and other military bases in Orange County have been complying with those regulations. In many cases they have been doing so long before the homes beneath their flight paths were constructed.
