Bell-Jeff 21, Chaminade 18--Bell-Jeff defensive back Paul Perkins intercepted Chaminade quarterback Dave Morrison’s deflected pass in the end zone with 51 seconds left in the game to preserve a win that gave the Guards sole possession of first place in the Santa Fe League.
Bell-Jeff (3-0, 6-0 overall) trailed after three quarters, 18-13, needed a fourth -quarter rally that ended with a 13-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Keith Fitzgerald to tight end Mike Thomson to remain undefeated on Fitzgerald’s 21-yard touchdown pass to receiver Bill Brockway. Fitzgerald completed all four of his passes on the drive for 51 yards.
Chaminade came back with a drive of its own that stalled at the Bell-Jeff 11-yard line. Chris Noonan then kicked a 27-yard field goal to close the gap to, 7-3.
Noonan added a 25-yard field goal early in the second quarter to bring the Eagles within a point, but only after Bell-Jeff’s defense stiffened inside its 10-yard line.
After a Bell-Jeff punt, Chaminade fullback Troy Kirk ran 65 yards to the Bell-Jeff five, setting up Morrison’s six-yard touchdown pass to Steve Orr putting Chaminade ahead, 12-7.
Chaminade (2-1, 2-3-1 overall) gave the Guards a scare in the fourth quarter by marching to the Guards’ nine-yard line before Perkins’ interception.
