A quality-control inspector at McClellan Air Force Base admits taking a bribe from a firm whose job was to remove cancer-causing asbestos from a government building. U.S. Atty. John Panneton said in Sacramento that Charles Allen Malia, 34, approached the contractor for the bribe. Officials of the company, P.E.M. Insulation of Benicia, contacted federal authorities. Malia admitted in federal court that he had received $2,500 from the company for certifying that it had satisfactorily completed the asbestos removal. Under plea bargaining, the prosecutor will seek no more than five years of prison. Malia also faces a fine of up to $250,000.
