N. Calif. Kaiser Hospitals Struck

OAKLAND — Thousands of workers struck Kaiser Permanente’s 26 hospitals and clinics in Northern California today, setting up noisy picket lines that some registered nurses refused to cross.
The strike by 8,700 workers over stalled contract talks started at 6 a.m., and picket lines went up at Kaiser health installations from the Oregon boundary 360 miles south to Gilroy. A Kaiser spokesman said that although periodic physical examinations and elective surgery may be postponed, all necessary medical care will continue.
