VINA DEL MAR, Chile — A Romanian cellist was forced to put on an unscheduled solo performance Monday after fellow-competitors boycotted her victory dinner at the end of an international music competition.
Ivonne Timolanu, a resident of Salzburg, Austria, was awarded first prize in the 13th Vina del Mar International Music Competition for her interpretation of Anton Dvorak’s Concerto in C minor.
But the judges’ decision was greeted with roars of disapproval from the audience and the other 20 competitors decided not to attend the celebratory dinner to protest the result.
