Hot lava oozing away from the encrusted main body of a seven-mile flow from Kilauea Volcano threatened four more houses in Kalapana, Hawaii. Scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said there had been no change in activity in Kilauea’s east rift zone vent. The biggest outbreak was reported on both sides of the flow about 150 yards above the coastal Kalapana Highway. The lava could no longer be seen entering the water, indicating that the movement of new lava was occurring underwater, a spokeswoman for the county Civil Defense Agency said.
