MEXICO CITY — The Transportation Ministry boosted train fares by about 30% Tuesday--the start of the holiday season when rail traffic is traditionally at its peak.
The ministry also authorized a 20% fare increase for taxis and jitney buses in the metropolitan Mexico City area.
Train fares were increased “to push ahead with a modernization program of the network,” a National Mexican Railways spokesman said, but morning newspapers said the boost is a hard blow for the thousands of Christmas passengers.
