Artificial Heart Recipient Dies 8 Days After Implant

TUCSON — Betty Shields, a 40-year-old mother of two who became the world’s 29th artificial heart patient, died Thursday at the University of Arizona Medical Center, eight days after receiving the implant. Shields died of “multiple organ failure,” hospital spokeswoman Jan Rooney said.
