Researchers at the University of Rome have isolated a virus that resembles a leukemia virus but appears to cause lymphoma, and they say that the finding increases the likelihood that such viruses may play a role in many unexplained human diseases. Designated HTLV-V by its discoverer, Dr. Vittorio Manzari, the new virus belongs to a family of so-called retroviruses that includes two leukemia viruses and two varieties of the AIDS virus, one that causes disease and one that does not. But the finding does not aid current victims of the disease.
