Illinois House and Senate lawmakers approved a plan to build a $120-million stadium for the Chicago White Sox, sending it to Gov. James R. Thompson for his signature.
The 45,000-seat, open-air facility would be built on the city’s South Side, near the American League team’s current home, Comiskey Park, the oldest baseball stadium in the country. The White Sox had threatened to leave the city if a modern stadium was not built.
Senators approved the plan, 30-24. The proposal took two votes to pass in the House, failing, 54-46, on the first but winning, 64-33, on the second.
