A Baja California state judicial police agent was killed and another officer wounded Friday night in a drive-by shooting just south of the San Ysidro border crossing, San Diego police reported Saturday.
Witnesses to the shooting said the two state police officers were in a car near a taxi stand on the Mexican side of the border when a submachine gun was fired at them from a passing pickup truck.
Sergio Arturo Mayen Lopez, 26, was struck in the head and died at the scene, a Mexican police spokesman said. His partner, Jesus Emilio Ortega, 33, received a grazing facial wound and was reported in satisfactory condition Saturday at El Prado Hospital.
Mexican law enforcement teams set up roadblocks at the border and around Tijuana in an attempt to find and capture the assailants. No suspects were in custody by Saturday night, police said.
