A Marine walking along the center of railroad tracks while wearing stereo headphones was struck and killed by an Amtrak passenger train bound from San Diego to Los Angeles, authorities said Sunday.
John M. Guinn-Shaver, 18, who was stationed at Camp Pendleton, suffered head injuries and died at the scene, San Clemente police said.
The train’s engineer told police the incident took place about 6:15 p.m. Saturday as the train was rounding a bend near Pacific Coast Highway and Pico Street.
Guinn-Shaver was walking north along the center of the tracks and failed to respond despite the engineer’s repeated sounding of the train’s horn. The engineer told police that the train’s emergency brakes couldn’t stop it in time.
The train, which was pulling six passenger cars, had just left the San Clemente station. It was delayed about two hours, authorities said.
