Local News in Brief : Chatsworth Firm Cited Over Hazardous Waste

A Chatsworth firm that makes printed circuit boards was cited Wednesday by the Los Angeles Board of Public Works for discharging high levels of hazardous materials into the sewer system.

The board placed the firm, Circuit Manufacturing Co., on probation rather than seal its sewer line because positive steps were being taken to correct deficiencies, board spokesman Don Norman said.

The firm has an industrial waste permit from the city allowing it to dispose of its treated byproducts in the sewers. But Bureau of Sanitation inspectors raided the firm on Nov. 19 and discovered that it was releasing excessive amounts of copper and lead wastes into the sewer system, Norman said.

Under the terms of its probation, the company’s disposal of its treated wastes will be monitored continually and the firm will be required to submit weekly status reports to the Bureau of Sanitation.

The company’s waste permit will be renewed on a monthly basis until all corrections have been made.
