CORONA — A special police drunk-driving enforcement squad netted 19 drunk-driving suspects in the first weekend of a targeted effort that will continue each weekend through the holiday season, authorities said.
Over the past weekend alone, Corona police officers arrested more than two-thirds of the number of drunk-driving suspects taken into custody during the entire three-week holiday season last year, Corona Police Lt. Roy VanderKallen said.
Sgt. Henry Aja, who heads the department’s traffic division, credited more-experienced officers for the dramatic increase in arrests. Police are more aware of the drunk-driving problem and are increasingly better able to spot suspects, he said.
“We’re out there enforcing drunk-driving laws, hopefully to keep people who’ve been drinking off the streets,” said Aja, who called the stepped-up enforcement a success so far.
“As far as I know, we didn’t have any major traffic collisions this weekend involving drunk drivers,” he said.
