Mother Is Killed in Carlsbad Crash

CARLSBAD — A 26-year-old San Marcos woman was killed Wednesday morning and her two children were injured, one critically, when the car they were riding in and a dump truck collided, Carlsbad police said.
Witnesses told police that a car driven by Debra Havins was attempting to make a left turn from Melrose Avenue onto Rancho Santa Fe Road about 8:30 a.m. when the accident with a dump truck traveling southbound on Rancho Santa Fe Road occurred, Sgt. Richard Kates said.
Havins was dead at the scene. Her 5-year-old daughter, Cassie, was reported in critical condition with head injuries at Children’s Hospital. Michele Havins, 2, was in good condition recovering from cuts and bruises, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The driver of the dump truck was not cited.
