N.D. Lt. Gov. Meiers Has Surgery

BISMARCK, N.D. — Lt. Gov. Ruth Meiers, diagnosed three months ago as suffering from lung and brain cancer, underwent a two-hour operation today to remove a malignant walnut-sized tumor from her brain.
“Initially, it looks really good,” said Dr. Kenneth Mattheis, who performed the surgery. Meiers, 61, who became the state’s first female lieutenant governor when she was elected in 1984, became disoriented and suffered slurred speech Sunday evening before entering the hospital.
