Heavy Takover Toll

How wonderful it feels to wake up one morning, pick up the newspaper and see an article on a subject that has bothered you for years.

Oh, how many times I’ve uttered the desperate plea, won’t someone write something about this takeover business.

You did it in John F. Lawrence’s column “In Takeovers, Human Toll Is Often Ignored.”

Maybe this will start some discussion at levels where policies are made.

Many years ago, my husband was a victim of a takeover and had to join another company, only to have that one taken over three years later.

And would you believe it? The same thing happened on his next job.

He finally said enough of this and went into business for himself. He was lucky he could.

My son-in-law recently had to make a career change because the company that employed him was sold to a larger corporation.

The Gemco closings did not take my job away, but I’m a victim of it, too.

I loved that store.

I bought all my appliances there and trusted them.

So greed has taken some pleasure and a bit of security from me.

There is a human toll, and I’m glad to see it aired.
