The United States defeated Czechoslovakia, 8-2, in the World Junior Hockey Championships at Prague, Czechoslovakia.
The tournament is for players under 20.
The Americans built a 3-0 lead in the first period before the Czechs cut the deficit to 3-2 after two periods. The U.S. squad broke the game open with five goals in the third period.
Greg Brown, Chris Biotti, Bobby Reinolds, Marty Nanne, Ed Krayer, Scott Young, Brian Leetch and Darren Turcotte scored for the Americans, who are 1-1 after two days of play.
In other games, the defending champion Soviet Union routed Switzerland, 8-0, for its second straight victory, Canada and Finland tied, 6-6, and Sweden overwhelmed Poland, 15-0.
Canada and Finland are tied for second place behind the Soviet Union with three points. Each team has one victory and a tie.
