137 Rebels Slain in December, Angola Says

LISBON — Angolan troops killed 137 rebels, captured 16 and seized mortars, small arms and ammunition in three southern provinces in December, the official Angolan news agency ANGOP said Wednesday.
ANGOP, monitored in Lisbon, said Angolan troops destroyed hundreds of bush hideouts of rebels of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola in the provinces of Namibe, Huila and Cunene. It quoted a military spokesman as saying that South Africa is stepping up its aid to the rebels.
