Physicians are not the only health-care professionals distressed by the quality of care provided by HMOs.
I am a registered nurse with 19 years experience and subscribe to an HMO. I thought that my experience would help me to get the medical care I need for my family with this type of medical coverage. Was I wrong!
The only benefit my knowledge afforded me was a clear view of the cost-cutting quality of the care we received.
During a recent illness I was forced to take my 12-year-old son to a specialist and pay for it when the HMO committee that reviewed our pediatrician’s request for a consultation was denied.
The old adage “You get what you pay for” is unfortunately as true in the health-care field as in the marketplace.
