SAN FRANCISCO — A fire in an electrical system atop the 1 Embarcadero Center office tower caused $250,000 in damage early Friday and left the top 20 floors of the 44-story building without power, officials said.
Officials said the smoldering fire was called in about 2:35 a.m. and was brought under control at 3:25 a.m. No one was injured.
Pacific Gas & Electric Co. spokesman Ron Rutkowski said the power was shut off at 3:12 a.m. He said the damage appeared to be mostly to electric cables connected to the three transformers on the roof and the electrical equipment within the building. He said PG&E; workmen would not be able to repair all the damage until late tonight at the earliest.
