Marty Moran upset West Germany’s Michael Gross in the 200-yard butterfly to highlight the first day of competition at the Mission Bay New Year’s swim meet in Boca Raton, Fla.
Moran, of the University of Michigan, was timed in 1:49.11. Gross, the four-time world champion in the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard freestyle, was timed in 1:49.15.
Gross, winner of two gold medals at the 1984 Olympics and current holder of three world records, came back later to win the men’s 50-yard freestyle in 20.96 seconds.
