SACRAMENTO — A Fresno schoolteacher who won a $3.43-million grand prize in the state lottery Saturday said stopping smoking was the key to his victory.
Frank Zummallen, 44, a fifth-grade teacher who won on the “Big Spin” wheel, said he quit smoking in November and bought his ticket at a store where he formerly bought cigarettes.
“I figured I’d buy a lottery ticket instead of cigarettes,” Zummallen recalled.
Zummallen is the first person to win a grand prize in the latest lottery instant-win game. He will receive $134,250 annually after taxes for the next 20 years.
